Aliwal Shoal is located off the KwaZulu-Natal southern coast near Umkomaas and within a Protected Marine Reserve. The shoal consists mostly of undersea fossil dunes and drop-offs that have sheltered breeding fish for centuries and it’s here that divers flock to see the diverse marine life and experience close encounters with a number of shark species. The shoal is classified a subtropical reef and contains both hard and soft coral.
Two shipwrecks make for an interesting dive for experienced divers, the Nebo and the Produce sank almost a century apart and both lie roughly 30m underwater.
The variety of sharks visiting Aliwal Shoal is impressive and the elusive tiger shark is mostly see at Protea Banks during the start of the winter months. Other sharks to be seen include the bullet-shaped Zambezi, the passive but fearsome-looking ragged tooth – or raggies as they are better known – and the hammerhead.
