Regarded as a pioneering venture back in the 1990s, The Bag Factory in Fordsburg, Johannesburg celebrated its 25th birthday recently. It was initially setup to assist struggling black artists with resources and to act as a vehicle for the distribution of their art but has since opened the facility to all. Well-known South African artist David Koloane, along with London art collector Robert Loder, began the venture and the idea of the name Bag Factory came from the previous building tenant called the Speedy Bag Factory; the word Speedy was dropped and so began a space for young talented artists and creatives seeking an affordable studio where they could collaborate and engage with like-minded people.
The Bag Factory is inextricably linked to several other renowned artists who began their careers here and whose works are now proudly on display in major galleries throughout the world.
