The Mpumalanga town of Barberton is famous for being the site of a 3.5 billion year old exposed section of continental crust and way back in 1898, a resident donated his rock collection to the opening of the Barberton Museum, unaware of the importance of the town’s ancient geology. His rocks are mostly still on display in the museum, along with a history of the town’s establishment, Stone Age discoveries, the gold prospecting days and a fantastic display of old photographs. A section of the museum contains interesting information on the Swazi people and their culture.
The museum consists of a number of other structures spread throughout the town and all are reached on a heritage walk. Grab a map from the curator to visit the Belhaven House Museum, a Victorian-style corrugated iron house filled with period furniture and a typical middle class residence in the late 1800s.
