The little gem of a village called Bathurst in the Eastern Cape lies on a rural road between Grahamstown and Port Alfred and is surrounded by hectares of green pineapple plantations. It’s the kind of village that most travellers would bypass without a second thought but for one thing: Bathurst has a giant, 3-storey high fibreglass pineapple. Gaudy would be the word to best describe it but the pineapple is what leaves a memory of Bathurst.
The village was founded in 1820 and named after Lord Bathurst, a British official. Bathurst is filled with historic monuments, numbering 18 in total, and all are worthwhile viewing; several are churches and their adjoining cemeteries, while the old powder magazine and Bradshaw wool mill were constructed by British settlers in 1821.
