The little gem of a village called Bathurst in the Eastern Cape lies on a rural road between Grahamstown and Port Alfred and is surrounded by hectares of green pineapple plantations. It’s the kind of village that most travellers would bypass without a second thought but for one thing: Bathurst has a giant, 3-storey high fibreglass pineapple. Gaudy would be the word to best describe it but the pineapple is what leaves a memory of Bathurst.
The village was founded in 1820 and named after Lord Bathurst, a British official. Bathurst is filled with historic monuments, numbering 18 in total, and all are worthwhile viewing; several are churches and their adjoining cemeteries, while the old powder magazine and Bradshaw wool mill were constructed by British settlers in 1821. For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
