It’s difficult to believe that such a picturesque and tranquil setting such as that of rural KwaZulu-Natal Province was for many years the scene of countless bloody battles between the British, the Voortrekkers and the Zulu nation. Here, wars raged for a period of over 60 years, beginning with the 1838 skirmishes between Voortrekker and Zulu parties, followed by the 1879 Anglo-Zulu battles that exploded over land annexation between the powerful British Empire and Zulu king Shaka Cetshwayo, and ultimately to the South African War that lasted for three years between 1899 and 1901.
The KwaZulu-Natal battlefields are spread over a large region and it’s best to take up the services of a registered tour guide to get the most out of your trip.
