To say this museum is unique is an understatement. The Correctional Services Museum in Pretoria is located in a past home of a Correctional Services Manager and later served as a pub and offices before being opened as a museum in 1992.
The museum contains bizarre items of interest and details the history of the South African penal system. Old photographs depict the original prison, built by a prisoner in return for a shortened sentence. A second prison was constructed in 1873 and included an outdoor gallows where the public were invited to attend executions on Saturdays. Then in 1907, the notorious Pretoria Central prison was constructed and is still operating today. The name of the prison was changed in 2013 to the Kgosi Mampuru Prison after a man who was hanged in 1883 for public violence.
