Curry’s Post was once a trading post established by a retired British Warrant Officer. The place had 2 hotels, a blacksmith shop and some stores. It was then on the main route and thrived until the new N3 motorway was built between Johannesburg and Durban, which bypassed Curry’s Post altogether.

Today it is a desirable holiday hideaway for those seeking downtime. Curry’s Post is set amongst acres of fertile green pastures dotted with the occasional forest and streams running through the valleys. For accommodation, there are charming country inns and guest houses, set in magnificent gardens, surrounded by the dreamy landscapes.

1. You can travel along the section of the Midlands Meander that passes through Curry’s Post – known as Route 2 – that includes arts and crafts, a weaving centre, a well-known leather company, coffee roasters and various restaurants.

2. The 900ha Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve covers an expansive landscape of natural forest, high peaks and deep gorges. The reserve has sublime scenery, a variety of buck species and small mammals, and self-guided trails.

3. For the adventurous, the Karkloof Canopy Tour is a series of exhilarating zip lines traversing an indigenous forest 30m below.  A scenic stopover is the 105m Karkloof Falls in the mist belt region, where monkeys and birdlife abound.

4. You can enjoy a round of golf at the 9-hole Bosch Hoek Golf Club surrounded by dams, lakes and giant trees.

5. Trout fishing is a major pastime in these parts and the Kamberg trout hatchery is worth visiting to learn of the trout lifecycle. Aside from Kamberg, another excellent location for brown and rainbow trout fishing is in Mooi River north of Curry’s Post.

Transport

The nearest airport to Curry’s Post is King Shaka International Airport 150km away. An alternate air route is via Newcastle, located about 200kms from Mooi River. Shuttle service companies operate at the airports, however, to best enjoy Curry’s Post and the gorgeous Midlands Meander, hiring a car is the practical choice. Did you know?

The nature conservationist Ian Player, brother of Gary Player and mostly known for his successful attempts at saving the rhino in the 1950s, was a recipient of a knighthood and two honorary doctorates for his major contributions to conservation. When he retired, he chose to live in Karkloof, the area neighbouring Curry’s Post.

Kamberg holds a trout festival every year and locals open up their homes to anglers requiring accommodation. Fishing is done on various dams scattered throughout the Kamberg Valley and only trout over 60cm are weighed.
