More info about Doring Bay
Doringbaai (Thornbay) once was a thriveing fishing village, but today the small harbor is hardly used and the fishing industry has collapsed. Doringbaai is situated along the West Coast, 3 ½ hours from Cape Town. Doringbaai has much to offer , with spectacular ocean views from the cliff paths, unique coastal vegetation, sea birds, wildflowers, whales and dolphins. Before the town was formally established, the bay was used as an anchorage on a northwards trading route. Old stories tell that provisions would be off-loaded here and then transported to Vanrhynsdorp by camel.
Confirming the bay's status as one time trading hub, the lighthouse still serves as beacon to local fishermen and passing shipping traffic. Thornbay is well known for Heavyside dolphin and is a good place to spot migrating whales in early spring. There is a hiking trail along the deserted beach between Doringbaai and Strandfontein. Getting there is easy: Take the R362 from the N7... Show more
About Guest Houses
For a more down to earth experience there are guest houses. Less expensive than hotels, they offer a more homey environment, as well as more privacy. Converted from a private house it’s a much gentler environment and for those with furry friends, there are also pet friendly options. They are usually well situated with shops and places of interest nearby. Being so small it offers a much more personal and intimate attention to it’s upkeep, leaving you with a more polished and homely experience.
