It’s on the lengthy stretch of road between Prieska and Kimberley in the Northern Cape that a strange and unusual rock-engraving site is located. Driekopseiland holds over 3500 rock engravings, the origins of which still puzzle scientists today and have sparked a number of theories that range from the work of aliens to the rock art traditions of ancient travelling herders. The engravings are believed to have been made around 1300 years ago and due to its artistic and cultural significance, was declared a provincial heritage site back in the 1940s.
The word Driekopseiland means ‘three-headed island’ and the site consists of a thick slab of rock, known as glaciated basement rock, situated along the Riet River bed.
