Diwali is one of India’s most important religious events and it is celebrated in South Africa too by its many Hindi residents. Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal Province is where the largest population of Indians reside and where a spectacular Diwali festival is held each year to commemorate the day.
Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights and symbolically signifies triumph of light over dark or good over evil. More than 10 countries observe the day as an official public holiday and the event is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains in slight variations.
Durban marks the event – when the darkest new moon appears on the Bikram Sambat calendar – with spectacular fireworks and Bollywood-style entertainment. The event is normally held in stadia to host the large crowds (South Africa has well over 500000 citizens of Indian descent) and will most likely continue to be held at the 56000-seater Moses Mabhida Stadium.
