Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights and symbolically signifies triumph of light over dark or good over evil. More than 10 countries observe the day as an official public holiday and the event is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains in slight variations.
Durban marks the event – when the darkest new moon appears on the Bikram Sambat calendar – with spectacular fireworks and Bollywood-style entertainment.
