Edgemead is a 15km drive on the main highway to central Cape Town and located within a vast shopping borough. Two major malls are nearby with a third planned to open in the near future. Edgemead is also within short driving distance of several beaches, Cape Town’s attractions and the renowned wine routes of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Durbanville.

1. Shopper heaven lies on either end of Edgemead; Tygervalley Shopping Centre has over 200 stores while Canal Walk has over 400 stores for shoppers to indulge in their retail needs. Both centres offer a range of restaurants, coffee shops, movies and other entertainment.
2. The GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World is across the highway and a great place for the entire family to enjoy a day’s outing. Gamble, watch movies, play arcade games, ice skate or dine at one of the many eateries in the food court.
3. The Durbanville wine route is on Edgemead’s doorstep. Travel the route to sample some of the best Chardonnay and other dry white varieties in the land. Many of the wine farms provide food pairings to complement the wine tasting.
4. Travel into Cape Town to visit the city’s iconic structures, from a boat trip out to Robben Island, to a hike up Table Mountain or a day at the V & A Waterfront. The city has many other attractions, ask your host for details.
5. Grab a towel (and wetsuit) and head for the beaches along the Blouberg esplanade. Swimming is possible at Big and Small Bay, while surfing can be attempted at any of the other beaches along this 5km stretch of sandy coastline.
6. Try sandboarding on the dazzling white dunes of Atlantis. Tour operators will collect you, provide the board equipment and a meal, and return you safely to your premises. Take along water and lots of sunblock.
Transport
The nearest airport is Cape Town International, 18km from Edgemead. Neighbouring Milnerton suburb has a few car rental agencies, however, car rental bookings can be done online. There are many taxi options available too. If you have the Uber app, order a ride via your mobile phone. Several local tour operators offer shuttle services between Edgemead, Cape Town and the airport. The closest train station on the main line into Cape Town or to travel south into Simon’s Town, is 18km away.

Most noticeable when driving through Edgemead is the lack of overhead cables and the many trees lining the streets. When the suburb was first planned in the late 1960s, a restriction was placed on exposed wiring and removing of planted trees. This was to guarantee an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere which has today, paid off.
Over 85% of Edgemead residents are English speakers, quite unusual, considering that the suburbs surrounding Edgemead are predominantly Afrikaans. The chief language spoken at both schools within the suburb is English.
