A helicopter flip is our suggested first introduction of Freedom Park, to provide a lovely aerial perspective of the 52ha Park perched on top of Salvo Hill just outside of Pretoria city centre.
Freedom Park was an ambitious but highly successful project undertaken in 2004 to not only honour those who fought for freedom but also an exploration into the mixed bag of cultures that makes South Africa so unique. The park reflects on the major events in South African history, from the beginning of the apartheid era to the present and how they impacted on the country’s citizens.
The impressive Garden of Remembrance contains plants from all regions of South Africa and the S'khumbuto memorial, a bunker-like structure that houses the Gallery of Leaders. For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
