Originally laid out to house mine workers in 1887 and named after a Glaswegian farm, Germiston gradually developed into a large city with major industries operating here. The world’s largest precious metals refining and smelting complex is located in Germiston which also boasts the largest lake in the Gauteng Province of South Africa.
Germiston lies on the East Rand, a short distance from its larger cousin Johannesburg and its permanent residents are a good representation of South Africa’s rainbow nation. The city has its own airport for chartered flights and from where various flying schools operate.
For visitors wanting to be stationed outside of Johannesburg, Germiston is quiet enough yet loaded with all conveniences and an excellent road network, to enjoy a restful stay.

4. There are a number of high-end shopping centres around Germiston, namely the East Rand shopping centre, the Eastgate Mall and Bedford Centre. All have lavish stores, quality restaurants and movie theatres.
5. Emperor’s Palace Casino complex is a short drive from Germiston. Pop in to gamble, attend a theatrical event or chill in the cigar lounge. The venue has numerous restaurants, shopping facilities and alternate entertainment for the non-gambler.

Transport
The OR Tambo International Airport is a mere 18km north of Germiston while chartered flights land and depart at the Rand Airport in the city. Car rental agencies are located at the airport and in Germiston, otherwise order a vehicle online. Metered taxis, shuttle service companies and Uber all operate in the area. For quick access to and from Johannesburg, use the Gautrain that can be boarded from the airport.
