If there’s one word of Sesotho you will learn on a visit to the Basotho cultural village that lies within the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State, it’s litema. Litema literally means fields and are in reference to the Basotho painted houses where forks (or sticks) are used to create patterns and symbols while the clay is still drying. These artistic murals are similar in nature to cultivated fields, hence the name.
The Basotho Cultural Village showcases the lifestyle and culture of the Basotho people, and while it’s fair to say the layout is somewhat commercial, the village accurately depicts a typical village scene.
A visit begins with a short introductory video of the construction of the village, the architecture, the litema process and other Basotho traditions. For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
