Pick up any flyer for the Golden Gate Highland National Park and it’s sure to be emblazoned with an iconic photograph of Brandwag buttress when the weathered sandstone cliffs give off a golden hue in the late afternoon sun. However, this is not the golden gate to which the name refers: these are two smaller bluffs, approximately 75m high and facing each other, that gives the park its name.
The 12000ha Golden Gate Highland National Park is home to several species of buck, the largest being the eland, along with baboon, small cat species, zebra and a range of smaller mammals, many of which are nocturnal. Raptors are to be seen high up on the cliffs or circling the air while South Africa’s national bird the blue crane is a regular visitor.
