Grahamstown Festival Reviews
More info about Grahamstown Festival
Since its early days in the 1970s, the Grahamstown Festival has pulled in the crowds and for 11 days every July, the town is turned upside down. That’s not to say the Grahamstown residents are complaining; business booms and this sleepy Eastern Cape town comes alive to the many forms of art presented to appreciative audiences.
Today the Grahamstown Festival is known as the National Arts Festival, a well-sponsored event that takes in all art forms, from street performances to big stage productions. The festival is the largest of its kind on the continent. In fact, there are two festivals that run concurrently; the main festival is a programmed event with featured performers chosen through a selection process, while the fringe festival provides unknown artists with a platform to present their work. Fringe performers are required to pay their own way including venue hire, and a percentage of profits are handed over to the organisers.
