The booming suburb of Hillcrest lies literally on the crest of a hill, to the west of Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. The Springside Nature Reserve in Hillcrest suburb has several trails through a section of endangered vegetation, home to over 150 bird species and a variety of mammals and reptiles.
For a true Zulu cultural experience, visit the PheZulu Safari Park and Estate nearby. The largest ethnic group in South Africa, the Zulus hold their traditions, beliefs and rituals sacred. Enjoy a Zulu dance and purchase an authentic shield as a keepsake.
Visit the popular Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market every Saturday morning where fresh farm produce, meals and creative crafts are on sale. Dog friendly market.
Giba Gorge Horse Trails south of Hillcrest offers horses suited for novice through to expert riders. Guided horseback trails venture along scenic paths into forests, across rivers and alongside waterfalls.
Travel into Durban for some seaside fun. Walk the Golden Mile, dine at one of the many restaurants along the pavilion and swim in the safe city beaches.
Where to Eat
Stretta Café at the Colony Shopping Centre serves authentic Italian dishes and excellent coffee. Join the Italian Slow Food Movement and spend a lazy afternoon here feasting on pasta while listening to a live local act.
The Mo-Zam-Bik chain of restaurants has one in Hillcrest; expect spicy and authentic Portuguese dishes made the Mozambican way. Breezy, sheltered deck. Piri piri chicken is always a favourite at this restaurant.
Bellevue Café is a popular eatery with a fresh and modern menu. Nicely decorated interior.
Winsome View Country Bistro is a great place to take the children. The animal farm and petting zoo on the premises will keep them thoroughly entertained while the parents relax and enjoy a breakfast, light lunch or toasty treat.
Night Life
The Keg and Trout is a lively pub where the locals meet, the bartenders serve draft pints and a wide selection of local and international beers.

Air The nearest airport is King Shaka International Airport, 70kms from Hillcrest.
Car There many car rental agencies in Durban city centre and at King Shaka airport to hire a vehicle, or you could order a rental online.
Taxi Several shuttle service companies operate out of Durban and the airport for travel to and from Hillcrest. Uber also operates in Durban, however, fees are costly for the 38km drive and it’s best to hire a car.
