South Africa is home to several species of crane and due to the gradual loss of their specialised habitat, the grassland and wetlands in which they thrive, some are threatened. Of particular concern are the Wattled crane, its conservation status listed as critically endangered, and the Blue crane, regarded as endangered. The Hlatikulu Crane and Wetlands Sanctuary aims to change this by ensuring the continuation of the species through their captive breeding programmes, education and rehabilitation.
Out in the wild the Wattled crane is wholly dependent on healthy wetland in order to nest and raise its offspring. The crane generally lays 2 eggs and once one hatches, the other is left to die. The Sanctuary collects and sends the 2nd egg to the Johannesburg Zoo for incubation and hand rearing. Crane puppets are used for the hatchlings to associate the rearing with their own kind.
