How, you might ask, could a long-dead dog be regarded as a landmark? The simple answer is that a statue placed in Jubilee Square in Simon’s Town and immortalising the dog is a physical landmark. The more complex answer is that this dog left such an impression on the people of Cape Town during his short 7-year life, that his name has endured for over 60 years and is associated with many things.
Just Nuisance was a Great Dane breed born in 1937. He was named Nuisance and as a young dog, he would leave home and return late in the evenings. His owner was to discover that he was catching the train into Cape Town, hanging out with sailors and escorting the drunk ones back to base.
