Situated on the west coast road between Cape Town and Yzerfontein, !Khwa ttu is a cultural learning centre for the San people, a group of marginalised citizens who have lived in the southern parts of Africa for over 40000 years. The San are considered South Africa’s first nation and while there is little written documentation relating to their history, oral accounts passed down the generations, rock paintings and the !Khwa ttu centre provide an insight into their culture. The words !Khwa ttu are a mouthful and require deft clicking of the tongue to properly enunciate.
The site of the centre was well chosen because it was here that the !Xam clan were driven from the area centuries ago. In the !Xam language, !Khwa ttu roughly translates to water.
