The inspiration for many adventurers and backdrop to Ernest Hemingway’s short stories, Mount Kilimanjaro boasts the highest mountain in Africa hence the fact that most people come to the park to climb this astonishing and treacherous rock-strewn mount.
The mountain is made out of three dead volcanoes. The Marungu route is the most travelled as it is the easiest course to the top of the mount.
Because of the altitude, the climate is considerably cooler and moisture is more abundant than the lower lands. As the altitude increases, the temperatures drops gradually while animal and plant life also change. Lush green foliage such as giant ferns becomes more obvious as you walk deeper into the dense rain forests. Columbus monkeys and ample bird life is cited in the large mature trees forming a canopy over head.
