South Africa’s premier game park, the Kruger National Park has been delighting animal lovers for almost a century. Kruger, as it’s known to the locals, serves a dual purpose: it acts as a conservation centre and a tourist attraction where thousands upon thousands of animals roam freely. Kruger has an excellent road network, albeit many still gravel, and the chance of seeing members of the Big 5 (lion, rhino, leopard, elephant and buffalo) are good. However, it’s often the smaller, more active animals such as the fearless honey badger, the African wild dog packs and the curious-looking aardvark that are the most interesting.
Choosing when to visit is important; in spring, new arrivals are seen jealously guarded by their parents, in summer the days are hot and the animals mostly active at sun-up and sunset, autumn brings less foliage and better animal sightings, while in winter, the rainfall is low and animals tend to congregate...
