South Africa’s only tropical dive site, Mabibi on the east coast of the country was for many years the best kept secret amongst the diving community. The place is sandwiched between Lake Sibaya in the west and the warm Indian Ocean to the east, and incorporated into the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mabibi’s relatively untouched sandy beaches attract female loggerhead and leatherback turtles during the nesting season in late spring. Hatchlings appear at the end of summer and battle their way into the safety of the waves as predators arrive from all directions to intercept their path. At low tide, fish become trapped in the rock pools scattered along the beach which make for ideal snorkelling spots. Out in the deep blue sea are the beautiful coral reefs, frequented by tropical fish to breed, while game fish and sharks patrol the waters.
