In the northern corner of KwaZulu-Natal Province and on the road between Newcastle and Volksrust is Majuba Hill, the site of a significant battle that took place between British troops and Boer soldiers. The date was 1881 and the battle happened during the 1st South African War which was being fought for suzerainty. British troops under the leadership of General Colley had climbed to the summit of Majuba with the intention of engaging with Boer troops from an advantage of height. The 2km climb had exhausted the British troops and while they lay resting, Boer soldiers made their way up the sides to spring a surprise attack. The result was defeat for the British who suffered significant casualties. Following this battle, the British signed a peace treaty to end the war and agreed to allow the Boers self-rule of the Transvaal Republic. For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
