The village gives visitors the opportunity to be captivated by the traditional lifestyle, architecture and beliefs of the Ndebele, an ancient group of people who originally stem from the large Nguni tribe, and the first to have split from them many centuries ago.
Ndebele social structures are fairly complex and clans are led by a chieftain known as the iNkosi who in turn, takes advice from a council. The head of the family is always the father, or umuzi. When the umuzi has more than one wife, things get somewhat complicated…
Artistic design is key to the Ndebele identity and anyone encountering their houses, brightly painted in stunning geometric patterns, are likely to stop in admiration.
