Marievale Bird Sanctuary Reviews
More info about Marievale Bird Sanctuary
The 1000ha Marievale Bird Sanctuary north of Nigel and 60km east of Johannesburg is a protected Ramsar wetland site (a wetland considered to be of international importance) and the preserve of a multitude of birdlife and a few small mammals. It’s a sanctuary for us humans too, a place to escape from the city’s stresses and unwind in quiet solitude.
The Blesbokspruit River runs through the area and over time, formed a large floodplain. The fresh, clean water pans attract birds where over 300 species, most of which are waterfowl, some migrating from the north during the summer months, breed amongst the reeds. Five bird hides have been constructed in strategic spots around the pans and there is a lovely picnic site to relax and appreciate the surroundings.

About Guest Houses
For a more down to earth experience there are guest houses. Less expensive than hotels, they offer a more homey environment, as well as more privacy. Converted from a private house it’s a much gentler environment and for those with furry friends, there are also pet friendly options. They are usually well situated with shops and places of interest nearby. Being so small it offers a much more personal and intimate attention to it’s upkeep, leaving you with a more polished and homely experience.
