The 6000ha Mkhomazi Wildlife Reserve lies within the Cobham section of the Maloti Drakensberg Park in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. Mkhomazi is only a 2-hour drive west of Pietermaritzburg and civilisation, yet it’s a part of the Drakensberg that remains rarely frequented due to its isolation and challenging terrain.
Mkhomazi is named after the uMkhomazi River that travels through the area for almost 300km to reach the Indian Ocean on the east coast. The name means ‘the place of the whales’ for the numerous whales regularly spotted along this section of South Africa’s shoreline.
The reserve protects the Mkhomazi state forest at 1860m above sea level and hikes through this area are magical; the thick wooded sections are home to several shy forest creatures and the curious vervet monkey, while out in the sunny valleys the mountain views extend far into the horizon.
