The Mountain Zebra National Park lies in the Eastern Cape Province in a high altitude and mountainous Karoo area. The park was established in 1937 specifically to ensure the continuation of the mountain zebra as these strikingly beautiful animals were close to extinction at the time. The conservation effort has paid off, many have been shipped to other reserves and predators and other mammals now roam the park to keep the population in check. Several years ago, cheetah were brought in and in 2013, three lions were introduced. Other animals of interest include the black rhino, caracal, brown hyena and Cape buffalo.
Well-maintained gravel roads make for easy game viewing and a good viewing spot is on the Rooiplaat plateau where many species of buck, zebra and wildebeest browse.
