The 2nd highest pass in South Africa, Naude’s Nek connects the small towns of Maclear and Rhodes in the southern section of the Drakensberg Mountains. This gravel pass is generally travelled by nature lovers, hikers, fly fishermen, birders, mountain bikers, photographers, adventure seekers, mountaineers and skiers (there is a ski resort nearby). The scenery is magnificent around these parts and waterfalls and glittering streams abound.
Amazingly, the pass was constructed in the 1890s by two brothers in their desire to provide an accessible route to new markets.
A drive along Naude’s Nek is challenging with steep climbs and hairpin bends, and very little in the way of protection barriers on either side of the road. Drivers are asked to take care when driving over the pass and to try and avoid this route during the rainy months when the road becomes slippery. For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
