Being the mother town of the Goldfields, the first town in the Free State and the sister town of Kutlwanong. Odendaalsrus should be a priority stop for all tourists. With all this history and importance surrounding Odendaalsrus, it is difficult to know where to start the tourist activities but it would be best to find accommodation and plan the trip from a central starting point.
Founded in 1912, Odendaalsrus was just another farming settlement and by 1946 it had 40 houses, three shops and a church. Then it exploded into the bustling town with the discovery of the richest gold reef in the world. The farm Geduld, became the centre of mining activities in the area as it was the site where they stuck gold. Situated between Kroonstad, Allanridge and Welkom, Odendaalrus was incorporated into the Matjhabeng Local Municipality in 2000 and it is seen as its mother town.
