The province of Mpumalanga has many fantastic destinations on offer with the charming town of Ohrigstad being one of its finest. Nestled at the foot of the imperious Drakensberg Mountains, Ohrigstad is known as the gateway to the Panorama Route and is in close proximity to both the Blyde River Canyon and the Echo Caves. Ohrigstad is also one of Mpumalanga’s oldest towns and has an enchanting and somewhat controversial history. The town was originally founded in 1845 and named after Hendrik Verwoerd, the leader of the Voortrekkers, and George Ohrig, but it was abandoned in 1848 after a malaria epidemic shattered the community. It was only resettled in the early 1900s and, today, is a proudly malaria-free zone.
