Once the legislative and judicial capital of the Zulu people, Ondini is today a cultural site that marks the scene of a great battle and past locality of the royal Zulu king’s residence. The place is known as the Ondini Historical Reserve and is an 8km drive out of Ulundi in the KwaZulu-Natal Province.
In 1879, Zulu king Cetshwayo was defeated in battle against British troops at Ulundi. The British burnt down his royal residence in Ondini and he was imprisoned at the Castle in Cape Town. Three years later he was allowed to travel to England to plead his case to Queen Victoria. She agreed to release him and allow him to continue as king whereupon he returned to Ondini to rebuild his palace, however, much had changed since his imprisonment and many opposed his rule. For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
