Once the legislative and judicial capital of the Zulu people, Ondini is today a cultural site that marks the scene of a great battle and past locality of the royal Zulu king’s residence. The place is known as the Ondini Historical Reserve and is an 8km drive out of Ulundi in the KwaZulu-Natal Province.
In 1879, Zulu king Cetshwayo was defeated in battle against British troops at Ulundi. The British burnt down his royal residence in Ondini and he was imprisoned at the Castle in Cape Town. Three years later he was allowed to travel to England to plead his case to Queen Victoria. She agreed to release him and allow him to continue as king whereupon he returned to Ondini to rebuild his palace, however, much had changed since his imprisonment and many opposed his rule.
