In the mid-1800s, the Ongoye forest in KwaZulu-Natal was the exclusive domain of Zulu king Mpande and his people who used it to collect plants required in the preparation of traditional medicines. All other activities in the forest were strictly banned which has resulted in a 4000ha section of Afromontane coastal forest being spared development and now protected in the Ongoye Forest Reserve. This type of forest is a rarity and only a few pockets remain throughout South Africa. Several rivers run through the reserve and birdlife is prolific. Ongoye is on the popular Zululand Birding Route and is reached from the east via Empangeni on rugged roads and over streams passable by 4x4 vehicles only, or via Eshowe in the west and on vastly better roads.

Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
