Short distance from Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Grand West Casino, Table Mountain and not too far from Cape Town International Airport. The breakfast was good to keep us going until, lunch at Moyo Restaurant at Bloomberg Strand or their branch at Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch.

It’s the views that will win you over during a stay at the upmarket residential suburb of Plattekloof in Cape Town. The suburb is elevated along the slopes of the Tygerberg Hills, however, the name is far from appropriate: it was mistakenly swapped with that of an adjoining suburb which lies in a valley. Plattekloof is Afrikaans for Flat Ridge, meant to have been the name for the flat suburb in the valley which is named Panorama!

Plattekloof has mushroomed over the years, the large exclusive properties are sought after and all have majestic views of Table Mountain, Table Bay and on clear days, Cape Point. The area has a popular shopping centre along with several drive-through and formal restaurants and cafés.

Plattekloof is a fairly new suburb, the area is safe, the streets are wide and lined with trees and it is bordered by a nature reserve. The main highway to Cape Town runs besides the suburb which is close to all conveniences.

Top 8 reasons to visit Plattekloof

1. Walk the easy hiking trails in the Tygerberg Nature Reserve above Plattekloof. The reserve has a small dam with shady trees to enjoy the scenery and possible sightings of the Bontebok buck.

2. Try an African Wood Massage at Ambienté Day Spa in Plattekloof. The spa is open during the week only.

3. Tobogganing at Cool Runnings in Bellville is a fun event for all ages, the track has 17 corners and riders can reach speeds of up to 40kph. It’s the only toboggan track in Africa.

4. The popular beaches at Blouberg are a 15 minute drive from Plattekloof. For families, nearby Bokkom Bay has many rock pools to explore. On windy days the skies are filled with the colourful kites of kite surfers making the most of the blustery conditions.

5. Plattekloof is next door to the start of the scenic Durbanville wine route. The route offers wine tasting and a few wine farms have onsite restaurants. Look out for zebra, eland and wildebeest on the Maastricht farm.

6. Head north along the N7 highway to reach the Cape Town Ostrich Ranch, 20 minutes from Plattekloof. The ranch offers tours through the ostrich breeding facility from incubation to adulthood. A highlight for some is the opportunity to sit on an ostrich.

7. Travel into Cape Town to experience the city’s attractions including the V & A Waterfront dockside retail centre with its restaurants and cafés along the water, diamond museum and boat excursions to Robben Island.

8. Plattekloof is surrounded by mega retail centres; Canal Walk at Century City and Tygerberg Shopping Centre in Bellville are two of the largest malls in the Cape. Other specialised malls such as the open air Willowbridge lifestyle centre offer an alternate shopping experience.

Plattekloof is 14km from Cape Town International Airport. Nearby Bellville has many car rental agencies, however, car rental bookings can be made online. Did you know?

The nearby De Grendel Wine Estate is a young Sauvignon Blanc wine producer, the first vines planted in 2000, however, the farm is best known for its prized Holstein cows first registered in 1912.

In autumn, the Cape Autumn Widow butterfly swarms in the Tygerberg Nature Reserve. This butterfly eats grass and flies low to avoid predators, the large eyespots on the wings their only defence. The female scatters her eggs as she flies.
