It is here that visitors can explore the intriguing craters and remnants that have been left behind by the volcanic eruptions; it is these craters that give the surface a distinctive moon-like landscape and fascinates its visitors further. Piton de la Fournaise spews yellow and orange lava throughout the day and at night the sparks that can be seen emanating from this bubbling cauldron is better than any fireworks extravaganza you have seen anywhere. Climatic variants range from dry tropical, humid to sunny Mediterranean. The picturesque island of Reunion also boasts three calderas: the Cirque de Cilaos, the Cirque de Mafate and the Cirque de Salazie. The more cultivated and civilised land and cities are concentrated on the beautiful coastal lowlands, like the capital city of Saint-Denis.
