Sandbaai is a small picturesque seaside suburb – with beach frontage jutting out to sea – in the town of Hermanus in Western Cape Province, South Africa. The region’s Mediterranean climate means the long summer days can be enjoyed on Sandbaai beach. The friendly residents are primarily Afrikaans speaking, however, English is spoken and understood throughout the suburb.

Things to do
Enjoy a whale watching cruise in Walker Bay offered by several reputable tour operators in Hermanus. The cruise is best enjoyed during whale season (June to November), however, a number of whale species are seen throughout the year.
The brisk offshore waves at Sandbaai are revered by surfers, hire a surfboard from one of several companies in Hermanus. Sandbaai beach is popular too for sun bathing and the small rock pools offer boundless entertainment for the kids.
Walk the 12km cliff walk starting at the new harbour and ending at the Blue Flag certified Grotto Beach. Pack a picnic basket for the beach and call a Tuk Tuk Transporter to return you to Sandbaai.
The Walker bay wine route inland and up into the Hemel en Aarde (Heaven and Earth) valley is a fabulous wine tasting experience. Many of the wineries offer outstanding meals at their onsite restaurants.
Walk across to the small lagoon and swimming beach at neighbouring Onrus Beach for some fun in the sun.
Where to Eat
Harbour Rock Sea Grill and Sushi bar has spectacular views of the bay and dishes to match. The young innovative chef prepares interesting and new creations to ensure a unique dining experience at every visit. The sushi menu can’t be ignored.
Ask a local to recommend a restaurant and The Milkwood in Onrus is likely to be mentioned. Practically on the beach, the restaurant consists of the Beach Hut serving light, lip-smacking meals and the more formal indoor fine dining restaurant. Book well in advance.
La Vierge along the wine route is worth a visit. The glassed restaurant is located on a hill with uninterrupted views of vineyards in the valley below. The dishes from this chef’s pantry are truly exceptional. Visit the tasting room to select your wine before sitting down to savour your meal.
Night Life
Pop down to the Gecko Bar at the new harbour to join the locals for a few drinks.
Tapas Food & Wine Bar is a lively outdoor venue located in the old Heritage Square in Hermanus. Sip on a glass of wine from the region while listening to energetic beats from the live act.
