Viewed from Google Maps, the Sani Pass on the border of South Africa and Lesotho looks like a lie detector graph gone haywire. The road up to the summit of the Southern Drakensburg Mountains (known on the Lesotho side as the Maloti Mountains) climbs steeply through a series of zigzags that’s best travelled by horse rather than by a vehicle. The road is gravel, with inclines that rise rapidly and sharp bends that will have your heart in your mouth. Yet, travelling over the Sani Pass is one of those ‘been there, done that’ bucket list events in life that should be attempted.
The Sani Pass can only be negotiated using a 4x4 vehicle and the pass climbs over 1000m to a height of approximately 2800m. In winter, the road is treacherous and is best left to experienced drivers.
