The Sani Stagger Marathon in KwaZulu-Natal is not your average running marathon; the route climbs a steep pass for half of the race and back down to the starting point. The endless hairpin bends and slippery gravel makes the Stagger more of an endurance race and where any chance of bettering standard marathon times are thrown out of the window.
For accomplished runners of 42km marathons, it’s suggested that the 21km half marathon first be attempted to appreciate the difficulty of this race that can only be described as gruelling. Runners are transported to the top at the South Africa-Lesotho border and run the length of the half marathon downhill, severely straining the knees, to finish on the Sani Pass hotel golf course. For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
