The Sani Stagger Marathon in KwaZulu-Natal is not your average running marathon; the route climbs a steep pass for half of the race and back down to the starting point. The endless hairpin bends and slippery gravel makes the Stagger more of an endurance race and where any chance of bettering standard marathon times are thrown out of the window.
For accomplished runners of 42km marathons, it’s suggested that the 21km half marathon first be attempted to appreciate the difficulty of this race that can only be described as gruelling. Runners are transported to the top at the South Africa-Lesotho border and run the length of the half marathon downhill, severely straining the knees, to finish on the Sani Pass hotel golf course.
