The increase in popularity of Scottburgh as a seaside holiday destination is slowly transforming this once tiny village into a major resort town. Scottburgh lies along the southern coast of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province, South Africa, 55 kms from Durban. This section of the coast is sometimes referred to as the Golf Coast for its proliferation of golf courses. Scottburgh has 3 within a 20km radius.
Scottburgh was discovered by a few bold individuals who recognised the area’s suitability for sugar production. They named the place Scottburgh after Sir John Scott, Natal’s Lieutenant Governor. A makeshift harbour transported the sugarcane via boat to Durban and so began what is today one of KZNs chief industries.
Scottburgh is an ideal getaway for the family to enjoy a comfortable and convenient beach holiday without straying too far from the big city lights.
Things to do
Scottburgh’s main swimming beach, Scott Bay is sheltered with terraced lawns, protected by shark nets and patrolled by life guards.
There’s fun for the entire family at the Scottburgh beachfront with its super tube, warm tidal pool on the beach, paddling pool for toddlers, and a miniature railway.
Aliwal Shoal located 5km out to sea is a fossilized sand dune rich in marine life and popular with local and international divers. Several shipwrecks have occurred here. A further 3km out is Protea Banks where 11 species of shark are spotted year round, most notably the Tiger shark. Note: Divers wanting to visit Protea Banks must hold an advanced certificate with a minimum of 20 dives logged.
Further south is Port Edward, the ‘gateway to the wild coast’ surrounded by coffee plantations and indigenous forests. Enjoy a tour of the Beaver Creek Coffee Estate and Roastery to sample the excellent coffee. Also nearby is the craftsmen at Burger & Sons where you can order custom made cutlery of exceptional quality.
Spend the day at Croc World Conservation Centre to watch the crocodiles being fed, a snake demonstration and to stroll through the bird aviary. Let the kids loose at the animal farm while enjoying coffee and a light meal at the onsite restaurant.
The Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve – a short drive from Scottburgh – stocks over 50 mammals including wildebeest, zebra, various antelope species, caracal and porcupine. The reserve is popular for birdwatching. Over 300 species have been recorded here.
Take a drive south into the Wild Coast with its picturesque landscape, casino and traditional villages, or head north to the big city of Durban. Most beaches along the way are ideal for swimming, surfing, kayaking and fishing.
Golf enthusiasts have a choice of playing any or all of the 3 golf courses around Scottburgh; Umkomaas, Selborne and Scottburgh golf clubs.
Seeking adventure? Visit Oribi Gorge to take on the rapids or attempt the world’s highest swing at 165m above the gorge.
The nearby Pennington Beach has Blue Flag status and is a lovely secluded area with safe swimming beach. Look out for dolphin schools frolicking close to shore.

Enzo’s Pizzeria is an established restaurant serving home-cooked Italian dishes and pizzas filled with an assortment of generous toppings.
Mozam Prawn Shack Restaurant offers good value seafood and sushi dishes. The place packs in the diners over weekends. Try the surf & turf special.
The well-laid out Bell & Anchor Restaurant has a good selection of seafood and grilled dishes on offer. This is a regular wedding venue so the restaurateurs are able to cater for big events, thus the popularity of their Sunday carvery.
For stunning views across the sea, Le Rendez-Vous Restaurant is a great venue to dine on the tasty wholesome meals offered.
KZN has a large Indian population and one of the most popular dishes prepared by this section of the community is the Bunny Chow. It’s a half-loaf of white bread scooped out and filled with a curry of your choice. Great to enjoy on the beach!
Night Life
The Wrecked Heron in neighbouring Park Rynie is a restaurant located on the beach. Saturdays are bonfire nights with live music and a party crowd.
The Beach Bar is a late night venue decked out Hawaiian-style. Locals pack the place to dance to fresh live music acts. Big screen TVs, pool table and huge outdoor area with sea views.
There is plenty of outdoor space at the Deck Restaurant and Pub to enjoy a free drinks on a warm night. Be there for Friday Happy Hour.

The first Scottburgh Spring Fest ran this year and the organisers are hoping it will become an annual festival. Plenty of fun activities are spread over three beaches and events include cardboard boat races, sandcastle building and fishing competitions. Loads of food stalls, crafts, etc.
