Originally created as a set for the hit movie Shaka Zulu, Shakaland in KwaZulu-Natal is a living museum that gives visitors the opportunity to experience the lifestyle, culture and traditions of the Zulu people. The site is named after Shaka, a great Zulu king who achieved fame through his military might and is credited with the creation of the iklwa, a short stabbing spear, and a larger Nguni shield to better protect his warriors.
Guided tours of Shakaland are offered to better understand the Zulu customs and beliefs. The 3-hour Nandi Experience (honouring Shaka’s mother Nandi) showcases many of the Zulu traditions that include beer drinking ceremonies where umqombothi or African beer is passed around in a clay pot known as an ukhamba. The tour takes in an exhibition by the Zulu impi or soldier demonstrating his spear throwing and stick fighting skills, a display of work by crafters and consultations with traditional healers and herbalists... For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
