Once the site of a major battle between Boers and British soldiers, Spioenkop looks over the mighty Tugela River which was dammed up at this spot and the body of water incorporated into the 5900ha Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve.
Spioenkop means ‘spy hill’ in Afrikaans and is one of a cluster of flat-topped hills known as ntabamnyama in Zulu, meaning ‘black mountains’.
The picturesque dam in the shadows of Spioenkop is a popular boating and water skiing destination, as well as a good fishing spot for carp and tilapia. There are a number of lovely picnic sites along the banks to enjoy a cold lunch after strenuous water activities.
The reserve itself is a well-known birding spot with over 250 bird species officially recorded here and with a few self-guided trails that attract hikers.
