Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve Reviews
More info about Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve
The nature reserve at Suikerbosrand (Sugarbush Ridge) outside Heidelberg in the Gauteng Province is named after the Sugarbush Protea which was once the country’s national flower. The flower is unusual in that it blooms in winter and is a common sight in the reserve. However, the reserve was established to protect some of the last remaining sections of bankenveld grassland. Almost 12000ha in size, the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve also preserves the diverse flora in the park and resident animals include cheetah, baboon, wildebeest, hyena, various species of buck and zebra.
Enter the reserve at the Diepkloof entrance to check out the interesting visitor’s centre and to collect information on the reserve, the designated picnic spots and the trail routes. The centre shows films to brief visitors on the diversity and importance of the reserve. Nearby is a museum located within an old farmhouse, while a resort in the reserve has a restaurant open to all visitors... Show more
