Tembe Elephant Reserve Reviews
More info about Tembe Elephant Reserve
Lying deep in the heart of Maputoland, the Tembe Elephant Park was established to preserve the world’s largest land mammal, the African elephant. They are also the last of the free-roaming herds that once trekked all the way to Mozambique. This route is no longer open and the elephants are now restricted to a 30000ha wilderness area. The area known as Maputoland is located in the far north of the KwaZulu-Natal Province and within a tropical and sub-tropical transitional zone. Here, the thick sand forests and well-watered grassland are the ideal environment for elephants.
Tembe has a reputation for hosting some of the largest elephant specimens and one particular individual who died of old age a few years back was considered the largest in Africa. He died at age 56 and his massive right tusk almost reached the floor.
But Tembe is also a Big 5 game park, with lions introduced a few years ago... Show more
