The tiny suburb of Three Anchor Bay consists of a small section of beachside promenade and a few residential blocks along the Atlantic seaboard in Cape Town, South Africa.

Three Anchor Bay lies plumb between the pulsating, vibrant Sea Point suburb and the green recreational parks of Green Point.

The bay area in Three Anchor Bay was once a useful smuggler’s cove before a British Governor put a stop to these activities by placing a chain across the bay, one side fastened to the mainland and the other secured by 3 anchors.

Three Anchor Bay’s beach is now used as a launching point for water sport enthusiasts and the car park is perpetually full with people enjoying the sea views or jogging along the promenade.

The suburb is a convenient base from which to enjoy the best of Cape Town.

Things to do

Being so centrally located, many of Cape Town’s major attractions are within walking distance: the V & A Waterfront for superb dining, big brand shopping and water activities, the Green Point Lighthouse and Biodiversity Park and sun tanning beaches along the Sea Point promenade and beyond.

Enjoy a swim at the nearby attractive Camps Bay and Clifton beaches. If surfing is your thing, join up with the locals at Glen Beach or further along the coast at Llandudno.

Catch the bus to the Cableway and take the cable car up Table Mountain or attempt a hike to the peak.

Drive the scenic route via Hout Bay and the striking Chapman’s Peak Drive to Cape Point, the most south-westerly point of Africa.

Crazy members of the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association regularly venture into the icy sea to swim from Three Anchor Bay to Robben Island, a gruelling 10km distance.
