It’s only a fraction of the scale of the Great Zimbabwe ruins but Thulamela is similar in layout and fine stonework masonry to the ancient site north of the border. Historians believe that the Thulamela citadel and surrounding structures were built by the ancestral Shona people, creators of Great Zimbabwe, as the likeness is too great to be coincidental, and that it was probably the last settlement before they either moved on willingly or were forced to move by other reasons that could include wars, climate change or an epidemic.
Surprisingly, Thulamela was only discovered in 1983 by a local game ranger who walked deep into the bush and stumbled across the walled city.
