More info about Tshatshingo Potholes
Situated in the Vhembe district of the Limpopo Province, the Tshatshingo Potholes were formed by swirling water from the Mutale River falling into a fissure to create perfectly rounded rock circles. Water enters the largest of these potholes and continues on its course below the ground to emerge at a rock pool further downstream.
The Venda people say that sometimes half-women are seen breastfeeding in the pools only to vanish when approached. Others believe that the water disappears into a bottomless pit and stories are told of people falling into the pothole, never to return. Hearing the locals tell stories of the legends surrounding the place is sure to enrich the experience of a visit to the potholes.
The potholes are reached via a gravel road to Tshidzivhe and are well signposted. A short walk along a path takes the visitor to the view site overlooking the potholes. From here, visitors can relax alongside the river... Show more
